Measure the lowest usable clearance under the bed before buying storage. The gap at the edge may be larger than the gap beneath a rail or centre support. A box must also have a clear route in and out, not just fit once pushed into place.
Measure the whole path
Record the height from the floor to the lowest obstruction, then measure the clear width between legs and the depth you can reach. Note rugs, uneven flooring and supports that interrupt the route. Keep space for your hands and any projecting handles.
If the lid must open under the bed, check that movement separately. Otherwise plan to pull the entire box out into a clear area before opening it. Consider bedside tables or nearby furniture that may block that route.
Use external dimensions
The Storite box example in our research was listed at approximately 44 × 33 × 25 cm. Confirm the current external dimensions and whether that height includes the wheels and lid. Do not use the 27 L capacity to infer that it will fit under your bed.
A box that is almost as high as the gap can catch on bedding or floor irregularities. The appropriate allowance depends on the actual bed, floor and product; this guide does not prescribe a universal clearance margin.
Plan what goes inside
- Choose items you can group and label clearly.
- Keep the filled load manageable to pull out and lift when needed.
- Follow the care requirements of clothing or other stored contents.
- Leave an access route for routine cleaning under the bed.
Do not assume a lidded plastic box is waterproof. Our research record for the example box did not support that claim. Under-bed storage is not a solution for damp conditions or contents requiring a different environment.
Trial the footprint
Mark the intended box outline on paper and check how it would move around the bed legs. Test the access route without buying anything. If you would need to move heavy furniture for every retrieval, a smaller container or another location may be more practical.

A useful question before you decide
Can I open the lid while the box stays under the bed?
Only if the full lid movement fits beneath every obstruction. Otherwise, allow enough clear floor space to remove the entire box before opening it, including space beyond bedside furniture.
